Doha: The Indian Media Forum, Qatar has termed the assassination of senior Indian journalist Gauri Lankesh a “deplorable act” that was aimed at silencing dissent.

“Those who follow the ideology of assassins of Mahatma Gandhi are now targeting almost everyone who cross their paths with impunity. The state should act and bring the culprits to justice when these fascist tactics were employed,” a statement by the forum said.

“When a person is assassinated, only his body is decimated; the ideas she espoused, the causes she championed and the dreams she cherished become the asset of whole humanity. They travel far and wide. The right wing doesn’t realize this simple fact,” it said.

“Ms. Lankesh’s murder can’t be the last one given the current situation in India where opposing voices are systematically targeted by the right wing. Gouri’s murder followed almost the same patterns that of Narendra Dabholkar, MM Kalburgi and Govind Pansare. The real culprits in Kalburgi murder case are still at large,” it said.

“The Government of India should take charge to stem these forces who unleashed a series of violence on who differ with them in various issues,” the statement signed by forum president R Rins and general secretary Mujeeb Rahman Kariyadan said.

“Gauri Lankesh, by laying down her life in the line of duty, will forever inspire journalist to tell truth to the power and to be brave in the face of troubles,” it said.
