Doha: As part of its efforts to develop the roads network and enhance traffic flow throughout the country, the Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ announced the start of Road Improvement Works in Al Furousiya Street.
Salem Al Shawi, Assistant Manager of Road Projects Department in Ashghal, said that the project is of great importance in terms of enhancing traffic flow and improving transportation in the West of Doha. He also noted
that Al Forousiya Street plays a vital role in connecting several areas in Doha West, in addition to being a major road linking Doha to the western areas of the country.
Al Shawi explained that the project, which is located within areas 54 and 55 in Al Rayyan Municipality, includes increasing the number of lanes of the 7.8 km long Al Furousiya Street to four lanes in each direction with a service road on both sides of the street, in order to enhance traffic flow and increase the street capacity to accommodate current and future traffic requirements.
The project also includes converting Al Furousiya and Muaither Roundabouts into signal-controlled intersections to ease traffic congestion as those two roundabouts are considered to be the most congested roundabouts in the area especially during peak times.
Al Furousiya Intersection will comprise four main lanes on both directions of Al Furousiya Street, three main lanes on both directions of Al Qalaa Street, and three lanes to turn left on all sides of the intersection. Works on this intersection are expected to be completed by the beginning of Q3, 2018. Muaither Intersection will comprise four main lanes on both directions of Al Furousiya Street, three lanes to turn left from Al Furousiya Street into
Muaither Street and vice versa, as well as two separate U-turn lanes for those coming from Al Rayyan on Al Furousiya Street. This intersection is planned to be completed by the end of Q2, 2018.
Al Shawi added: “The project includes widening Al Manaseer Intersection to include four main lanes and three lanes to turn left on all sides of the intersection, as well as one separate U-turn lane on both directions of Al Furousiya Street.”
The project’s road improvement works include installing 233 light poles on Al Furousiya Street, providing pedestrian and cyclist lanes, pavement and road marking, installing directional signage, providing Intelligent Transport System (ITS), developing the irrigation system, and landscaping works along the street. The project also includes infrastructure improvement works in the project’s area such as constructing a positive storm water drainage system, upgrading the TSE network, and protecting utility lines in the area.
The project is being implemented by Al Jaber & Makhlouf, at a cost of approximately QR 244 million. The project is expected to be completed in Q4, 2019.
