Doha: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched emergency health and nutritional response in the places of internally displaced people (IDPs) in the Taiz and Sa’ada Governorates of Yemen.
At the premises of QRCS’s mission in Taiz, an introductory workshop was held for representatives of the health sector, planning department, district health directors, and managers of the target health centers.
The session discussed the project’s activities and mechanism, to give an overview of the interventions and procedures to be carried out by QRCS for the IDP and most vulnerable communities.
Nabil Jamel, General Manager of the Planning and International Cooperation Bureau in Taiz, said, “We discussed the details of the project of emergency health and nutritional response in the places of IDPs in the districts of Al Ma’afir, Al Shamayatayn, and Al Mudhaffar. We had already signed the project’s agreement with QRCS, with $1m funding from the Yemen Health Fund (YHF).”
According to him, the project involves multiple health interventions, including supplies, training, awareness, health equipment, and staff remunerations. He expected the project to effectively address the very needs of Taiz, especially concerning health.
Jamil Al Jamai, Manager of the Saina Health Center in Al Mudhaffar, said, “I would like to thank QRCS for their previous contributions, which upgraded the center to be compared to a district hospital in terms of advanced equipment. Earlier, we covered three other districts, serving up to 13,000 cases per month”.
“Today, we are optimistic about having QRCS here again. QRCS is more than welcome. They are always such great helpers. We are proud of partnering with them, and we will work together to provide health services,” he added.
Under the project, QRCS will ensure that the IDPs and host communities have access to comprehensive health services, including vaccination, prevention of communicable diseases, the essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) package, and malnutrition treatment for mothers and children.
Also, QRCS will secure monthly supplies, such as medications, water, fuel for electric generators, solar power system, staff remunerations and training, community awareness-raising, referral of critical cases to hospitals, and furnishing and maintaining health facilities.
Funded by $1,698,573 from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) under YHF, the project is estimated to reach out to 230,000 persons. In Taiz, the services will be provided through two hospitals, three health centers, and two mobile clinics. In Sa’ada, three health centers and three mobile clinics were contracted.
