Qatar to chair WTO’s TRIMs Committee

The Ministry of Economy and Commerce said that H E Sheikh Ali bin Alwaleed Al Thani, Director of the State of Qatar’s office at the World Trade Organisation (WTO), was unanimously appointed head of the Trade-Related Investment Measures (TRIMs) committee and received wide support from WTO member states.

The Ministry said that H E Sheikh Ali bin Alwaleed Al Thani chaired the WTO’s TRIMs meeting yesterday at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva. The meeting discussed remarks on the policies of some member states in terms of imposing local components in the fields of investment, particularly energy and communications. The meeting also reviewed remarks on the new or amended legislations of member states in line with the WTO regulations.

TRIMs supervises the implementation of the Agreement on Trade-Related Investment Measures, which was negotiated during the Uruguay Round. The agreement stipulates that no member shall implement a prohibited measure in line with the provisions of Article 3 of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) on National Treatment on Internal Taxation and Regulation or Article 11 on Anti-dumping and Countervailing Duties, especially since some investment measures can have restrictive effects or distort international trade.

This is the first time a representative of the State of Qatar leads a WTO committee.
