Doha, Qatar: Undersecretary of the Ministry of Municipality H E Eng. Ali bin Mohammed Al Ali participated in the High-Level Ministerial Session convened on the sidelines of the Zero Waste Forum 2026 in Istanbul, Republic of Türkiye.
During the session, he delivered Qatar’s statement in the discussion titled “Reducing Post-Harvest Losses: A Strategic Perspective on Food Supply Chain Efficiency,” where he emphasized the importance of reducing post-harvest losses and enhancing the efficiency of food supply chains as fundamental pillars for achieving food security and environmental sustainability, particularly in light of the growing challenges associated with climate change, increasing food demand, and mounting pressures on natural resources.
Al Ali noted that Qatar places significant importance on addressing agricultural loss and food waste as a national priority. In this regard, Qatar is working, within the framework of the National Food Security Strategy 2030, to develop a comprehensive national program aimed at reducing food loss and waste in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He also highlighted the national efforts undertaken in this field, including the implementation of a national project to establish a baseline assessment of agricultural loss and food waste indicators, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and several national partners. The project aims to provide accurate data and indicators to support policy and program development and measure progress achieved in this area.
He further explained that the State of Qatar has taken practical steps to enhance agricultural production efficiency and reduce losses throughout the food value chain by advancing sustainable agricultural practices, improving post-harvest operations, and strengthening logistics, cold-chain, and storage systems.
These efforts contribute to improving the quality of agricultural products and minimizing losses during transportation and distribution.
During his participation, he. also highlighted Qatar’s key initiatives and projects in the fields of environmental sustainability and waste management, which have contributed to improving environmental performance and supporting the transition toward a circular economy, in line with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy.
He stressed that international cooperation, the exchange of expertise, and the development of innovative solutions are key enablers of more efficient, resilient, and sustainable food supply chains.
He reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with countries and international organizations to support joint efforts aimed at achieving sustainable development and food security.
On the sidelines of the forum, the Undersecretary held a number of bilateral meetings aimed at strengthening international relations and expanding avenues of cooperation in areas of mutual interest. In this context, he met with H E Ibrahim Yumaklı, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Türkiye, where they discussed ways to enhance cooperation and exchange expertise between the two sides in the agricultural and environmental sectors.
