The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and Mission of the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Doha concluded on Tuesday a three-day training course on human trafficking.

More than 20 cadres of the National Human Rights Committee, including department managers and employees, participated in the course.

The training course shed light on several issues related to combating human trafficking, most notably the identification of indicators of trafficking cases, strategies for conducting interviews with victims, referral mechanisms and coordination with relevant authorities.

Director of NHRC Programs and Education Department Mubarak Mohammed Al Safran said that the training program aims to contribute to strengthening the capabilities of workers and monitoring officials of the NHRC in the field of human rights related to human trafficking cases.

He added that the participants learned about the concept of human trafficking in national law and international conventions, identified methodologies for monitoring indicators of human trafficking cases by the relevant authorities, in addition to identifying methodologies and strategies for conducting interviews with victims of human trafficking.

He noted that the participants received lectures introducing the UN International Organization for Migration and the Sustainable Development Goals, and reviewed the sustainable development goals related to combating human trafficking and the concept of human trafficking in national law and international conventions.

For her part, Chief of UN Migration Mission in Doha Iman Ereiqat said that the course comes in the context of consolidating the strategic partnership between the UN Mission and the NHRC.

She added that the implementation of such programmes with the National Human Rights Committee is of a special nature and value in view of the pivotal role that the Committee plays in defending various vulnerable groups and in combating human trafficking.

This training course is the first joint activity between the UN Migration Mission and the National Human Rights Committee in the State of Qatar.

The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding this year with the aim of increasing coordination and cooperation on issues of mutual interest, particularly with regard to strengthening capacities in combating trafficking in persons and protecting the rights of migrant workers.
