Doha: GCC residents travelling to UAE will have to apply in advance for a visa online. UAE will discontinue the visa on arrival option for expats with residency in GCC. The new rule comes into force from April 29.
The UAE government introduced the online facility in May 2015 and this rule was to be implemented from October. But it was advanced to April 29, 2016.
In a note on their website Emirates Airlines warned that if someone fails to obtain a visa in advance via the Internet, they will have to return on the next available flight. These changes are expected to make the entry procedure smoother and more efficient for travellers.
“All GCC resident permit holders will soon need an online visit visa before travelling to the UAE. This change is final and will be effective from Friday, 29 April 2016,” Emirates Airlines said.
“Please apply for an online visa before travelling to the UAE. If you fail to do so, you will have to return on the first available flight.
“This change will create a smoother and more efficient process for travelers on arrival,” the note added.

You can apply for the visa online here
Not all residents will need to apply for online visa. People from 47 countries are eligible for visa on arrival in UAE. They can get their visa stamped free of charge on arrival at one of the UAE airports. The countries include most of the Western European countries, Canada, United States of America, Australia, Japan, Vatican City, Brunei, Singapore etc. Check the full list to see if your country is in the list.
To apply for the visa you need a valid passport with more than six-month validity and 3-month validity for GCC residency. According to government website process takes 24-48 hours but it warned that “usually the process of issuing visa since the creation of the application until the final decision takes between 24-48 hours, but there are other factors to be taken into consideration, so the processing time is subject to MOI procedure. Online applications may be submitted at any time during the 24 hours.”
