The Public Works Authority  (Ashghal) is currently implementing Al Khor Expressway Project, which is one of the key projects of the Expressway Programme.

The 34km highway runs from approximate southern extent of the Doha Golf Club and the northern limit is up to Al Bayt Stadium, which is currently being constructed in close proximity to Al Khor City entrance.

The project includes the construction of dual five-lane carriageway in addition to 10 grade-separated interchanges, fast cycling lane and shared path for both pedestrian and cyclists.Traffic Diversion on Al Khor Coastal Road to enable construction works of Al Khor Expressway Project.

To enable the construction works of 3 major interchanges, about 9km section of Al Khor Coastal Road will be closed starting from Semaisma Interchange up to the end of the project to the North.
This closure has been implemented in coordination with the General Directorate of Traffic and will start on Friday for a duration of 18 months.

During the closure, road users that currently use Al Khor Coastal Highway to travel between Semaisma Interchange and Al Khor City, will be required to use Semaisma road, North Road, and Al Khor Road to reach their respective destination, as shown in the attached map.

For the road users heading from Al Khor to Doha, who wishes to revert back to the un-closed part of Al Khor Coastal road they can use Al Shamal Road and exit from Umm Garn Interchange (Exit 29)

Road users who wish to reach West Bay area, Qatar University and Lusail City can continue on Al Shamal Road and use Izghawa Interchange. Those who wish or reach Al Kharaitiyat, Al Ebb and Leabaib can use Al Kharaitiyat interchange. Road users who wish to reach Al Kheesa and Jeryan Jenaihat can use Al Kheesa interchange. It is worth mentioning that the alternative route includes Semaisma road and Al Khor road, both of them consist of three lane dual carriageways, in addition to North Road, which is one of the expressway projects that is developed by Ashghal and characterised by its smooth flow. The north road is comprised of four lane carriageways in each direction.

The journey time between Al Khor and Semaisma usually take about 15 minutes and would take only an additional five to ten minutes using the alternative route  Ashghal will install newly implemented traffic road signs to alert and provide guidance to road users about the closure and alternative roads.

The closed section of Al Khor Coastal Road will include the construction of three new interchanges that will provide free flow movements in all directions; Semaisma interchange, which is a two-level interchange with Al Khor Expressway at grade and Semaisma road as flyover.

Tenbek Interchange is a two-level with Al Khor Expressway at grade and a flyover connecting the Tenbek District with Halat Awbair District to the East of Al Khor Expressway. The final one is a two level interchange that will be built close to Al Bait Stadium and is located at the intersection between Al Khor Expressway and Al Khor Airstrip Road. Where the main road will be at grade and the secondary will be a flyover.
