Doha: M7, a creative startups hub dedicated to innovation and entrepreneurship established by Qatar Museums, has announced it is organising an online panel discussion entitled ‘Between Film and Design’- the second in its Dardasha Speaker Series.

The event to be held via Zoom at 6.30pm on November 16 will explore what the space between characters represents and how that space can be filled with production and costume design to create a specific mood, said M7’s Instagram post.

“You will discover the role of design in filmmaking and how it contributes to the overall flow of the story, and how it encapsulates a unifying vision for set design, prompts, and wardrobe,” read the post, adding the session will also “review how to communicate the theme of a story.”

To be moderated by curator, writer and historian Glenn Adamson, the panel will feature film director Amjad Abu Alala; film director and assistant professor in design at VCU-Q Maysaa Almumin; and multimedia storyteller, filmmaker and visual artist Mayar Hamdan.

Launched last month, Dardasha Speaker Series is the latest in M7’s successful and engaging design-focused online programmes.

The series brings together Qatar-based, regional, and international designers and thought leaders to explore questions related to the complex role of design in life. It started last month with a panel discussion entitled “Between Art and Design.” Since the start of the global pandemic, M7 has launched a number of online initiatives for the country’s growing creative community.

In April and May, M7 organised a biweekly series of online coaching sessions by leaders in the field, intended to guide and encourage aspiring designers.

It was followed by an online group mentorship development programme, which ran from July 6 to September 30, aimed at exposing creatives from all disciplines of design to relevant subjects concerning the future of their industry.

M7 serves to advance the careers of Qataris in creative industries, especially design and fashion; train aspiring entrepreneurs in creative fields; spark creativity in people of all ages and backgrounds through exhibitions, performances, films, educational programmes, and public discussions; and help connect Qatar’s innovators with the world.

M7 is located in a new five-storey, 29,000sqm facility in the heart of Msheireb Downtown Doha, the mixed-use development that is reviving the city’s historic core as a sustainable new live-work neighbourhood.
