Assistant Director-General of the General Directorate of Endowments, Eng. Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Meer
Doha, Qatar: The General Directorate of Endowments at Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has announced the registration of a new real estate endowment in Lusail dedicated to supporting orphan sponsorship, reinforcing efforts to promote sustainable charitable giving and social solidarity.
The endowment consists of a real estate unit donated by a female benefactor, who has retained trusteeship of the property for the duration of her lifetime.
Upon her passing, trusteeship will be transferred to the General Directorate of Endowments. In accordance with the donor’s conditions, the income generated from the property will be allocated to orphan sponsorship through the Family and Childhood Endowment Fund.
According to the General Directorate of Endowments, this is the donor’s first registered endowment, reflecting the growing awareness of the importance of endowments in supporting sustainable development and strengthening the culture of philanthropy within the community.
The ministry said the endowment represents a model of long-term charitable planning by allowing the donor to benefit from the property during her lifetime, as permitted under Islamic law, while ensuring that its proceeds will continue to provide lasting support to one of society’s most vulnerable groups through a productive charitable asset.
Assistant Director-General of the General Directorate of Endowments, Eng. Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Meer, said the new endowment demonstrates increasing public awareness of the concept of endowments and their lasting social impact.
He noted that Qatar’s endowment system is designed to accommodate the diverse wishes of donors while preserving endowment assets and implementing their conditions in accordance with Islamic principles and legal regulations.
Al Meer added that the donor’s decision to retain the right to benefit from the property during her lifetime before dedicating its revenues to orphan sponsorship highlights the flexibility of the Islamic endowment system.
It enables donors to organize the use of their endowments in ways that fulfill their legitimate objectives while ensuring that the benefits ultimately serve charitable causes of their choosing.
He explained that the Family and Childhood Endowment Fund plays a significant role in supporting initiatives benefiting families and children, particularly orphan sponsorship, by creating sustainable financial resources that help improve beneficiaries’ living conditions and provide for their essential needs through an institutional framework that guarantees continuity.
Al Meer also affirmed that the General Directorate of Endowments continues to develop and maximize the returns of endowment assets to fulfill donors’ conditions and strengthen the sustainability of charitable resources. These efforts align with the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs’ strategic plan to promote the culture of endowments and charitable bequests while expanding their contribution to community development.
The ministry stressed that caring for orphans should not rely solely on short-term assistance but can instead be sustained through productive endowment assets that generate continuous income over time, ensuring uninterrupted support while providing donors with ongoing charitable rewards. The Family and Childhood Endowment Fund is one of the General Directorate of Endowments’ principal charitable funds.
It supports endowment initiatives focused on families and children, contributes to improving the quality of life of orphans and other vulnerable groups, strengthens social solidarity, and reflects the humanitarian objectives of the Islamic endowment system.
