Doha, Qatar: Minister of Municipality H E Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah chaired the ministerial session of the 7th General Assembly of the Islamic Organisation for Food Security (IOFS), held yesterday, via video conference.
This session marked the conclusion of Qatar’s presidency of the previous session, during which the presidency was officially handed over to Kazakhstan.
At the beginning of his speech, the Minister expressed Qatar’s appreciation to Kazakhstan for hosting the current session. He praised the efforts of the organisation’s General Secretariat and member states in supporting its goals and enhancing its role in achieving food security and sustainable agricultural development.
He emphasised that since Qatar assumed the presidency of the 6th General Assembly held in Doha in 2023, it has been keen to support the organization’s mission to enhance food security, develop agricultural cooperation, and consolidate integration among member states.
The Minister noted that during its presidency, Qatar worked to support the organization’s strategic path by hosting high-level meetings that contributed to the development of the “Food Security Strategic Plan for OIC Member States 2026–2035” and strengthened coordination with partner institutions.
He pointed out that the meeting represents an opportunity to reaffirm the collective commitment to making food security a strategic priority, especially in light of the increasing global challenges facing food and agricultural systems, which require responses based on cooperation, innovation, and shared responsibility.
The Minister stressed the importance of strengthening the institutional and financial capacities of the organization to ensure the sustainability of its programmes and increase its performance efficiency, alongside continued voluntary support for its initiatives and projects.
Furthermore, he announced Qatar’s support for the establishment of the IOFS International Gene Bank Initiative, reflecting its ongoing support for the organisation’s programmes and initiatives following the end of its presidency of the General Assembly.
He also underscored the importance of expanding participation in the organisation to enhance its role as an effective platform for cooperation in the fields of food security and sustainable agricultural development, renewing Qatar’s full support for Kazakhstan as it assumes the presidency of the General Assembly’s upcoming session.
