Khartoum: Vice-President and Secretary General of the Global Alliance of National Human rights Institutions (GANHRI) Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri has called for providing the necessary support to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) by the transitional government in the Republic of Sudan.
He also congratulated the First Vice President of the Transitional Sovereign Council and Commander of the Rapid Support Forces Lieutenant General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo on the election of Sudan as a member of the Human Rights Council for 2021 as a representative of the African group.
This came in the meeting held yesterday between Lieutenant General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo and Dr. Ali bin Sumaikh Al Marri at the headquarters of the transitional government of the Republic of Sudan.
The Secretary-General of GANHRI praised Sudan’s joining of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, renewing his welcome of the decision to establishing an steering committee for the national human rights commission, and GANHRI’s commitment to support Sudan in all aspects related to human rights.
He called for institutionalizing a dialogue between the Sudanese government and GANHRI, stressing that the transitional period requires the consolidation of all governmental efforts with the efforts of NGOs to enhance the state of human rights. He expressed his delight that GANHRI pledged to provide the necessary technical support to write the law establishing the national human rights commission. He also called for forming a national strategy on human rights to ne a building block for transitioning towards democracy, justice, and the rule of law in the Republic of Sudan. He also welcomed the lifting of economic sanctions in Sudan, adding that those sanctions had grave implications on the ability to practice basic human rights and called on the international community to accelerate the procedures of lifting the economic embargo.
Dr. Al Marri provided an overview on the Global Alliance of National Human rights Institutions, which includes national human rights institutions from all around the world united by a vision for a world where every individual enjoy their full rights. The alliance has 127 national institutions as members who all cooperate to strengthening their work in accordance with the Paris Principles. Dr. Al Marri and Lieutenant General Dagalo also participated in the final day of a project organized by the Geneva Institute for Human Rights to enhance the capabilities and benefit the Rapid Support Forces.
Al Marri expressed his delight with the visit he paid to Sudan to discuss matters related with the national mechanisms related to human rights, noting that GANHRI looks forward to cooperating and communicating with Sudanese institutions and all stakeholders in Sudan.
