The State of Qatar has affirmed its keenness to continue supporting the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and its various activities, with the aim of combating terrorism, organised crime, drug trafficking and corruption in the world. This came during the meeting of the Qatari delegation participating in the 10th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (COP10), headed by Adviser to H E the Minister of Interior, H E Major General Dr. Abdullah Al Mal, and the membership of Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H E Dr. Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi; and Ambassador of the State of Qatar and the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations and international organisations in Vienna, H E Sultan bin Salmeen Al Mansouri, with the Director of the United Nations Office in Vienna on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Dr. Ghada Wali.
During the meeting, Major General Dr. Abdullah Al Mal indicated that the State of Qatar has funded the global programme for the implementation of the Doha Declaration, issued by the 13th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in 2015, which is the largest programme offered by one country in the history of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, as the programme has become a model for the support provided by countries to the United Nations office.
He added that this programme has proven its effectiveness and vitality and has achieved the highest possible outcomes, to support the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has not prevented the programme from continuing its work.
He pointed out that the number of countries benefiting from the activities of the global programme, according to the statistics of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, has reached 186, including 36.000 youth and 65.000 children.
He stressed that the programme transformed the recommendations of the Doha Declaration into programmes on the ground, especially within the education for justice pillar and the crime prevention for youth through sport. The UNODC director confirmed that the office looks forward to continuing work and coordination with the State of Qatar during the next stage, in a way that strengthens the response to organised crime in all its forms, expressing her gratitude for the generous support provided by the State of Qatar to the United Nations and the Vienna office, especially with regard to the implementation of the global programme of the Doha Declaration.
