Doha: The US House of Representatives on Thursday voted to end the authorization for the 2003 invasion of Iraq that has since been the legal basis for a series of US military actions in the Middle East and other parts of the world.
It was initially passed at the request of the Bush White House in October 2002 to allow it to invade Iraq. The move could potentially alter the course of America's "forever wars" spurred by the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
The Senate is working on similar legislation and US President Joe Biden has said he would sign. The revocation of the 2002 authorization would constrain the president's war powers.
While the US Constitution gives the power to declare war exclusively to the US Congress over the past few decades that power has shifted to the White House. Presidents since at least the Vietnam War of the 1960s have found ways to start wars without a formal Congressional declaration.
