Doha: Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) announced an expansion programme for the Cuban Hospital as part of its efforts to expand its facilities to enhance patient experiences and improve access to specialized medical care for residents of Dukhan and western areas of Qatar.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2020 as the expansion will keep pace with the demand for hospital services during the current and future period.

The Cuban Hospital was officially opened in 2012. As a joint project between the two governments of Qatar and Cuba, the hospital is staffed by more than 450 Cuban medical professionals.

The Cuban Hospital's Medical Director Angel Mario Felipe Garmendia, said that the expansion works will increase the capacity of the outpatient clinics by 30 percent and add new gynecology and obstetrics clinics which will be integrated into a maternity ward. The Bone and Joint Unit will also be upgraded, which will include additional consultative clinics, radiology clinics and a specialized pharmacy.

The expansion also includes upgrades to some inpatient rooms and operating theaters.

The umbrellas in car parks will be replaced. Safety, fire fighting and surveillance systems will also be strengthened. Works will also include the construction of a mosque within the hospital facility and a chemical disposal unit, which will be the first of its kind in the western regions of the country and is part of the preparations for the 2022 World Cup.

The Medical Director explained that the expansion works are part of a comprehensive expansion program that aims to enhance the patient experience. These innovations allow faster access to high-quality specialized services and many important services too.

He pointed to the recent significant increase in the number of patient visits, with over 85,000 outpatient visits and nearly 6,500 hospital admissions recorded in 2018, compared to 63,000 outpatient visits and 4,700 admissions in 2016, calls for expansion to cope with the growing demand of society.

The Cuban Hospital provides all medical and surgical services to more than 25 specialties and plays an important role in relieving the pressure at other hospitals within Hamad Medical Corporation.
