Hamad International Airport (HIA) has achieved yet another milestone. Since its launch in May 2014, HIA has been setting the standard for the modern day airport experience. Combining cutting-edge technology, world-class sculptural art curated in partnership with Qatar Museums, and an extensive hospitality and retail offering, HIA has successfully established itself as a leading international hub.

HIA welcomed 120 million passengers since the beginning of its operations till the end of last year. HIA has been recognised for its punctuality, ranking second among the most punctual major airports scoring 85.41 percent on-time performance. Also, as many as 2.46 million passengers used the E-gates at HIA last year, including 1.28 million arrivals to the country and 1.18 million departures from the country. HIA currently has 40 electronic gates, including 19 in the arrivals lounge and 21 in the departures lounge. HIA plans to open 20 new E-gates with 10 gates at the departure lounge and as many at the arrivals lounge soon.

The airport’s strategic geographical location at crossroads of the Eastern and Western part of the world gives HIA a strong competitive advantage,” HIA Chief Operating Officer Eng Badr Mohammed Al Meer said recently. HIA’s resilience is due to new strategic partnerships and to a combined effort from the airport, Qatar Airways and Qatar Tourism Authority, who have worked together to encourage and promote tourism and travel in Qatar. While Qatar Airways accelerated global expansion with the launching of 10 new destinations last year, Qatar Tourism Authority’s efforts to allow visa-free entry for citizens of 80 countries makes Qatar the most open country in the region and supports HIA’s growth to a great extent.

HIA is currently a candidate for the Best Airport in the World award by Skytrax, which also classified it as a five-star airport in 2017, making it one among only five other airports in the world to achieve this prestigious status. It was ranked Sixth Best Airport in the World by the 2017 Skytrax World Airport Awards, moving up four places from 2016. HIA has also won the ‘Best Airport in the Middle East’ title for three years in a row.

HIA is setting a high standard for airports regionally and internationally. HIA is all geared up to host thousands of visitors in the run-up to 2022 World Cup and beyond. HIA is also working towards delivering sophisticated and innovative solutions that offer an unparalleled travel experience. HIA’s overall achievements are unmatched by any other airport in the region. HIA continues to be one of the fastest-growing hubs in the world.
