Doha: The Syrian Medical Association in the State of Qatar (SMAQ), held a virtual seminar in cooperation with the College of Pharmacy at Qatar University, and (QPhUS) - Qatar Pharmacy Undergraduate Society, to raise awareness about Glaucoma.
The virtual meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Syrian Medical Association in Qatar Dr. Muhammad Munjid (pictured), Deputy Dean of the College of Pharmacy for Student Affairs, Dr. Alaa Al Owaisi and a number of professors of the College of Pharmacy and students, and a number of doctors from Qatar and the Gulf countries.
The presentations dealt with the seriousness of Glaucoma, which described as a dangerous disease that damage the optic nerve, and leads to a gradual loss of vision to complete blindness in some cases.
Dr. Mahmoud Saeed Farah, an ophthalmologist at Al-Ahli Hospital, explained the basic symptoms of the different types of Glaucoma, and the surgeries that may be necessary in some advanced cases. For his part, the pharmacist, Dr. Bassam Fawzi Rashid, talked about Glaucoma medications and eye drops, side effects and risks that may result from the wrong use of the medicines.
The lecture stressed the importance of periodic examination of eyes over the age of 40, which mainly helps in early detection of this dangerous disease. The presentations were followed by interactive questions from the participants.
