Qatar’s IPI up by 10.4% in December 2020

Doha: Qatar’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) for December 2020 stood at 100.7 points, showing an increase of 10.4 percent compared to the previous month (November 2020). When compared on year-on-year basis, the IPI index has decreased by 5.7 percent compared to the corresponding month in 2019, data released by the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) show. 

The index of Mining sector showed an increase by 12.0 percent compared to the previous month (November 2020), as a result of the increase in the quantities of “crude oil petroleum and natural gas” by 12.0 percent, while “Other mining and quarrying” also showed an increase by 3.8 percent. When compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (December 2019), the IPI of Mining decreased by 6.3 percent. 

The index of Manufacturing sector showed an increase by 4.4 percent compared to the previous month (November 2020), as a result of the increase in “Printing and reproduction of recorded media” by 71.3 percent, followed by “Manufacture of Cement and other non-metallic mineral products” by 7.0 percent, “Manufacture of refined petroleum products” by 4.9 percent, “Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products” by 4.8 percent, and “Manufacture of basic metals” by 1.1 percent. 

However, a decrease was recorded in “Manufacture of beverages” by 4.8 percent, followed by “Manufacture of rubber and plastics products” by 1.2 percent, and “Manufacture of food products” by 0.9 percent.

On the other hand, in terms of annual change, comparing to December 2019, a decrease of 2.8 percent was recorded, affected by the following groups: “Printing and reproduction of recorded media’’ by 66.4 percent, followed by “Manufacture of beverages” by 13.8 percent, “Manufacture of food products” by 7.0 percent, “Manufacture of basic metals” by 6.9 percent, and “Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products” by 3.8 percent. However, an increase was recorded in “Manufacture of Cement & other non-metallic mineral products” by 19.6 percent, “Manufacture of rubber and plastics products” by 5.7 %, and “Manufacture of refined petroleum products” by 2.9%.

The index of Electricity sector showed a decrease of 17.4 percent in the production of “Electricity” group between December 2020 and the previous month (November 2020), while the annual decrease (comparing with December 2019), was 3.5 percent. 

The index of Water sector showed a decrease of 2.2 percent in the production of “Water” group between December 2020 and the previous month (November 2020), while the annual decrease (comparing with December 2019), was 1.1 percent.
