Doha: The Doha Institute for Graduate Studies organised a lecture under the title “Cybersecurity: Reality and Challenges” via video conference technology, as part of series of periodic lectures organized by the institute.
The Senior Software Engineer in Cybersecurity at Qatar Computing Research Institute, Aref Al Tamimi, explained, at the beginning of the lecture, several definitions of the term “cybersecurity”.
He explained that it refers to the practice of protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks, which usually aim to access, change or destroy sensitive information. In this context, he covered a number of other cyber terms such as space, cyberattack, and servers.
On the importance of cybersecurity, Al Tamimi said that the current digital age makes cybersecurity a necessary and indispensable matter, especially with data revolution in Internet.
He pointed out that the level of readiness of institutions for cyber attacks is measured by the available technologies to them, and the devices associated with old systems, in addition to human resources.
On the national strategy for cybersecurity in the State of Qatar, the lecturer explained that it is based on several pillars, including creating a safe and solid cyber environment, protecting the national vital information
infrastructure, as well as responding to, resolving and recovering from cyber incidents and attacks, and setting legal, regulatory frameworks to enhance the safety and vitality of the cyber space.
Al Tamimi concluded by saying that the hacking process is done by taking advantage of digital vulnerabilities, which he said are discovered by hackers, in addition to not updating the systems constantly, and placing malicious programs in devices.
