The Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science (QNCECS) celebrated the International Day of Education which falls on January 24. Held under the slogan of ‘Learning for the People, Planet, Prosperity and Peace’, a number of Qatari schools that are affiliated with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) participated in the event.
Secretary-General of the QNCECS, Dr. Hamda Hassan Al Sulaiti, pointed out in her speech that Islam was the first to call for education in its teachings. She added that learning has contributed to the progress and development of societies, as no society can be reformed or made more civilized and advanced without the process of education.
She pointed out that educated individuals have the ability and awareness to acquire many job opportunities and experiences that make them more capable of achieving sustainable economic growth and development in the present and the future.
Al Sulaiti affirmed that Qatar understands that education is necessary for the country’s development, and is one of the most important goals that achieve its National Vision of 2030 as well as the Global Sustainable Development Goals.
The state has also provided the perfect educational environment to establish and open many high education institutions that apply teaching and conduct research to contribute to solutions to sustainability, and to provide a skilled workforce that works to develop knowledge-based economies.
Dr. Al Sulaiti noted that Qatar has not failed to provide all aspects of support to teachers and students annually, and to allocate prizes for distinguished students, schools, and teachers.
Qatar has not forgotten its humanitarian duty towards the International Society, so it cooperated with Unesco to provide good education for the millions of children around the world who have lost their rights to learn due to conflicts, wars, natural disasters and poverty, in addition to cooperating with many programs such as Education for All (EFA) and others that support sustainable development.
On her side, the Consultant of International Organizations and National Coordinator of Unesco-affiliated schools, Hessa Al Dosari, said that celebrating the International Day of Education comes in harmony with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to embody the important role of education in achieving the goals of the 17th plan.
She also noted that education plays an active role in all fields related to sustainable development, including health, environment, agriculture, industry, human development and other areas. She also explained that today’s event confirms the State of Qatars commitment to good and comprehensive education for its children.
