A view of the under-construction project of Mesaimeer outfall, one of the longest in the world which is being developed by Ashghal.
The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has completed 50% works on Mesaimeer Surface & Storm Water Drainage Tunnel & Outfall Project.
The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) had commenced works of the outfall linked to Mesaimeer surface and storm water drainage tunnel in November 2017.
It has made remarkable progress with about 50 percent of the outfall tunnel excavation works completed. The project is expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2021, said Ashghal in a video shared on its Twitter account.
The Mesaimeer outfall is one of the longest outfall in the world with a length of 10 kilometers from the seashore which ensures the preservation of the marine environment in the country.
The tunnel lining is conical universal precast concrete rings with a diameter of around four meters and it is reinforced by steel fibers to protect the tunnel.
At a depth of 15 meters below the seabed excavation of the outfall tunnel is a major construction challenge due to changing land nature, the ground pressure and the water pressure at this depth.
A highly professional and specialised team carries out all marine works, says the video. Excavation is done using the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) with ‘Earth Pressure Balance’ technique designed to operate in range of the ground condition in Qatar.
The tunnel ends on a vertical riser shaft, which pushes storm water flows to a diffuser field with an area of about 11,000 square meters
