DOHA: On the occasion World Heart Day, Mohamed Abdulla A A. Al Suwaidi, Chairman, Al Abeer Medical Group, Qatar, has launched the Heartbeat Package with the aim of creating awareness about cardiac diseases among the residents of Qatar. Dr Sirish Shetty, Internal Medicine Specialist at Al Abeer, conducted a seminar on the topic ‘A Health Heart’ to help people achieve longer and better lives through prevention and control of heart diseases and strokes.
Heart disease and stroke is the No 1 killer disease in the world, claiming approximately 17.3 million lives a year. Physical Inactivity contributes significantly to ageing of the heart and can lead to obesity, diabetes and hypertension. Controlling major risk factors such as an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and tobacco use can prevent heart attacks and stoke and help the heart to age more slowly.
Dr Laxman D G, Internal Medicine Specialist at Al Abeer said that the use of tobacco is one of the most important risk factors to be controlled in order to have a healthy heart. Quitting the use of tobacco will help to keep the heart young as it improves “good” cholesterol, reduces the level of blood clotting and overall decreases the chance of a sudden blockage of a blood vessel. Smokers not only put their own lives at risk, but they also endanger the lives of those around them, with passive smoking increasing the risk of coronary heart disease by 25-30 per cent.
Dr Nazeem Shamsuddin, Head – Operations, Al Abeer Medical Center, Qatar said that Al Abeer Medical Center is dedicated to helping in early detection and prevention of diseases in Qatar. “We have been in the forefront of conducting several public awareness initiatives and health screening programmes with the aim of generating awareness and promoting healthy lifestyle practices,” he said . Dr Nazeem urged the residents of Qatar to take advantage of the highly discounted Heart Screening Package which will be available at the Center until November 30, 2016.
