The passing of Father Amir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani marks the end of a defining chapter in Qatar’s modern history. As the nation mourns the loss of the leader widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, tributes from across the world have echoed the sentiments of pride, gratitude and respect felt by Qataris at home and abroad.

In the days following his passing, messages of condolence poured in from heads of state, monarchs, governments and international organisations, reflecting the extraordinary global stature that the late Father Amir earned through decades of visionary leadership. World leaders remembered him as a statesman who transformed a small Gulf nation into a respected global actor, while maintaining an unwavering commitment to the prosperity and dignity of his people.

During his reign, the Father Amir oversaw a period of unprecedented development that reshaped every aspect of national life. Under his leadership, Qatar emerged as a global energy powerhouse, expanded its educational and healthcare institutions, invested in knowledge and innovation, and built modern infrastructure that laid the foundation for future generations. His vision helped position Qatar as a confident nation with a distinctive voice on the international stage. The world’s response has also highlighted another enduring element of his legacy: diplomacy. The late Father Amir believed that nations, regardless of size, could contribute meaningfully to peace and dialogue. The international respect shown in recent days reflects the role Qatar came to play as a bridge-builder, mediator and trusted partner in regional and global affairs.

The declaration of national mourning and the scenes witnessed across the country have demonstrated the profound affection and reverence with which the late Father Amir is held. Yet the most enduring tribute lies not in ceremonies or messages, but in the nation he helped build. Modern Qatar stands today as a living testament to his foresight, courage and determination.

As Qatar bids farewell to its Father Amir, the nation does so with sorrow but also with immense gratitude. The tributes from around the world affirm that H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani was not only a transformative leader for his country, but a figure whose legacy will continue to inspire far beyond its borders.  Qatar will carry forward his enduring legacy under the wise leadership of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.
