QATAR’S transport sector is undergoing a significant transformation, moving beyond conventional infra structure development towards a more integrated, sustainable and technology-driven mobility system. Electric mobility, autonomous transport, artificial intelligence and data-led planning are increasingly shaping the sector, reflecting a broader effort to prepare the country’s transport networks for future needs.
One of the most visible achievements is the transition to electric public transport. Qatar has made rapid progress in electrifying its public bus fleet, with the Ministry of Transport targeting a fully electric public bus fleet by 2030 or earlier.
The transition, which began with trials in 2018, is supported by the development of charging infrastructure and dedicated facilities, marking an important shift towards cleaner public transportation. The next frontier is autonomous mobility.
Qatar has moved from testing driverless technology to con ducting increasingly advanced trials of autonomous vehicles. Recently, the Ministry of Transport announced the successful pilot of electric robotaxis operated by Mowasalat (Karwa). More than 2,500 trial trips have been completed since the pilot began in August 2025, with more than 94 percent of journeys completed without human intervention.
A second phase is expected to move towards remote operation without a safety officer onboard along approved routes. The development is significant not only for the introduction of a new mode of transport, but also because it demonstrates how technology is being tested in real-world conditions.
Qatar’s Autonomous Vehicle Strategy provides a framework for the development, testing, licensing and operation of autonomous vehicles, indicating that regulation is being developed alongside the technology. Artificial intelligence and data are also becoming increasingly important to the country’s transport ecosystem.
Smart traffic management, camera- and sensor-based monitoring networks, digital integration between the Doha Metro, buses, taxis and limousine services, and real-time passenger information systems are among the technologies being developed to improve the efficiency and reliability of transport services.
These advances point towards a transport system in which infrastructure, vehicles, data and passengers are increasingly connected. The use of technology can help authorities manage traffic more efficiently, optimise transport operations and provide commuters with better information, while supporting wider sustainability objectives.
The Transportation Master Plan 2050 provides a framework for the future development of the country’s transport system, with greater integration between transport and urban development. Qatar is moving from building transport infrastructure to developing a smarter mobility ecosystem, one that is cleaner, increasingly connected and progressively more autonomous.
