Qatar had provided enduring support to the Syrian people since the beginning of unrest in 2011. The country has supported the Syrian statehood by a multitude of means after the launch of the political and economic recovery process and the inauguration of H E Ahmed Al Sharaa as Syrian president,
The leadership of the two countries held talks in Doha yesterday. The Syrian president voiced support for measures taken by Qatar to safeguard its sovereignty and security following Iranian attacks on Qatar.
The two leaders underscored their commitment to regional security and stability. They also discussed bilateral ties and ways to develop them.
In a post on X, the Syrian president said the talks with H H the Amir opened wider prospects for joint cooperation in key areas, particularly energy, investment and trade connectivity.
On January 30, 2025, H H the Amir’s visit to Damascus was a pivotal milestone in the path of Syria’s transformation. The visit marked the first by an Arab and international leader to Syria, imparting significant political and symbolic meaning.
The visit came just hours after the inauguration of Al Sharaa, sending a clear message of support for regional and global legitimacy. Qatar has been at the forefront of countries that stood by Syria since the fall of the former Syrian regime on December 8, 2024, as it operated an air bridge of aid, which included medical aid, food, and shelter supplies and played its role in addressing their humanitarian situation. The visit of the Syrian president in April 2025 strengthened bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Among the first steps of Qatari support was the announcement by Qatar and the Saudi Arabia of the settlement of Syria’s overdue financial obligations to the World Bank worth $15m. This enabled the resumption of the World Bank’s programmes aimed at rebuilding of institutions. Within the framework of its support for the new Syria, Qatar resumed the work of its embassy in Damascus after nearly 13 years of severing all diplomatic relations with the Syrian regime in 2011.
