Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly was significant not only for its assessment of the crises confronting the region, but also for the principles it set out on how nations can withstand uncertainty while continuing to build for the future.
A particularly important message was that resilience does not emerge when a crisis begins. It is built through years of planning, preparedness and investment.
H H the Amir pointed to Qatar’s efforts to secure supply chains, strengthen national institutions, maintain strategic reserves and develop trusted partnerships. This approach has enabled the country to protect its development priorities even amid severe regional disruption.
The speech therefore linked national security with development in a comprehensive sense. Investment in education, healthcare, economic diversification and national capabilities, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, was presented as an essential part of strengthening society and preparing it for future challenges.
Another central message concerned the credibility of the international order. His Highness’s forceful remarks on Palestine placed the principle of equal application of international law at the heart of the global debate. He highlighted the continuing suffering in Gaza, the situation in the occupied West Bank and Israeli violations affecting neighbouring states.
The address also highlighted the importance of functioning state institutions across the Arab world, and support for sovereignty, territorial integrity, development and reconstruction in Syria, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Lebanon and Yemen.
The address highlighted that preparedness, development, strong institutions, respect for international law and human dignity are not separate priorities, but mutually reinforcing foundations for a more stable world.
