Doha, Qatar: Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani has said that there is a strong possibility that the United States and Iran could reach a diplomatic solution, despite the publicly stated differences between the two sides.
In an interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, to be published in full today, Thursday, he stressed that any US-Iran agreement must take into account the interests of countries in the region and the wider world. He also reiterated Qatar’s rejection of the use of the Strait of Hormuz as a tool of pressure in any conflict.
He explained that there must be a formula for coexistence based on respect for sovereignty, good neighbourly relations, and non-interference in the security of any party.
The Prime Minister affirmed that Qatar’s sovereignty is a “red line” that will never be compromised. He added that civilian facilities must not be targeted, describing them as “a source of livelihood for our peoples, the backbone of our economy, and a key component of global energy security.”
Regarding the economic impact of the recent Iranian attacks on vital facilities in Qatar, the Prime Minister said the country’s economy has repeatedly proven its resilience and ability to absorb shocks.
He noted that Qatar has “clear plans, flexible strategies, and financial reserves sufficient for long periods,” while indicating that the coming phase will see measures to enhance the efficiency and rationalisation of public spending.
Sheikh Mohammed added that recent regional developments have underscored that the security of GCC states is indivisible, and that confronting shared threats requires genuine Gulf integration capable of meeting current challenges.
In response to a question about whether Qatar would reconsider its military relations with the United States, the Prime Minister clarified that ties with Washington are strategic, based on a comprehensive partnership, shared interests, and well-established understandings.
As for the Peace Council established by US President Donald Trump, primarily for Gaza, of which Qatar is a member and has allocated $1bn in support, he reaffirmed Qatar’s full backing for the council’s mission in its capacity as a transitional body.
