Doha: A number of Qatari entities and businesses including Qatar Financial Centre (QFC), Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE), QNB, INJAZ Qatar, Bedaya Center and Qatar University have launched Money Week Qatar 2018 under the motto “Money Matters Matter”.
The initiative is part of Global Money Week, an annual worldwide campaign to raise awareness of the importance of financial education and inclusion for children and youth. 137 countries will be taking part in the week-long event which will run from March 11 to 17.
Global Money Week aims to promote the importance of financial rights, especially for children and youth. For Money Week Qatar, sponsored by QNB 1,250 primary school students from 15 different schools across Doha will take part in a range of activities that will aim to instill within them the value of money, saving for the future and spending money responsibly.
A variety of volunteers from across the community including financial professionals from international institutions, local businesses and senior students will take time throughout the week to teach the children interactive and engaging lessons in financial management. In addition, the children will also have the opportunity to visit the Qatar Stock Exchange.
Money Week was launched eight years ago by  Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. Since then, it has grown into a worldwide initiative with more than 130 countries and more than 7 million children participating every year.
Dr. Bahia Tahzib-Lie, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands to Qatar, said: “It’s great to see how eager children are to learn about money and spending is wisely. I am very proud to see that Qatar again takes part in Global Money week. It is never too early, or too late for young people to gain the financial skills they will need to shape their lives and enhance their future wellbeing.”
Yousuf Mohamed Al Jaida, Chief Executive Officer, QFC Authority, said: “The QFC is extremely proud to be the main partner for Money Week Qatar 2018. Children and youth are the next generation of change makers and through this initiative we can ensure we are doing our very best to empower them to develop the right skills they need to make smart financial decisions throughout their life.”
Rashid bin Ali Al Mansoori, CEO of Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) said: “Qatar Stock Exchange plays a pivotal role in the economy of Qatar and because of this we invest considerable resources in providing education and market awareness training to a wide range of audiences. We are particularly proud of the programmes we deliver to schools and higher education institutions, during which we provide their students with a grounding in how stock markets work and the benefits of sensible investing. We subscribe fully to the goals of Global Money Week and CYFI in providing our youth with the knowledge that will allow them to develop the necessary skills to make smart financial decisions throughout their lives.”
San Lie, Project Leader Global Money Week Qatar, concluded: “I am extremely happy we got this of the ground in Qatar. Last year I started off with only one school, this year with the help of all volunteers and our new partners we grew it to 15 schools.”
