Doha, Qatar: With the approach of Eid Al-Fitr, citizens and residents across Qatar are stepping up preparations, as shopping malls, traditional markets and hypermarkets witness a surge in activity despite the backdrop of ongoing regional developments.

Families and residents are making final preparations for the joyous occasion, undeterred by regional tensions, reflecting the country’s enduring stability and spirit of celebration.

The Amiri Diwan has announced a seven-day holiday for the public sector, running from March 17 to March 23,  allowing citizens and expatriates alike ample time to mark the end of fasting with family gatherings, prayers and shared meals. This extended break has added to the pre-Eid momentum, with many choosing to stay in Qatar rather than travel abroad amid the ongoing regional crisis.

Malls such as Mall of Qatar, Doha Festival City and Place Vendôme have transformed into vibrant hubs, some shops adorned with Ramadan lanterns and Eid-themed displays. Crowded fitting rooms and stacks of colourful fabrics signal the last-minute rush for new attire. Extended shopping hours until midnight have drawn families who browse after evening prayers, sifting through racks of discounted clothing, festive outfits for children, perfumes, accessories and traditional garments.

Hypermarkets including Lulu, Carrefour and Retail Mart are equally bustling. Special Eid promotions on sweets, dates, chocolates, nuts, rice, cooking oils and household items have drawn long queues. Shoppers stock up on traditional treats to share with guests, while fresh produce and bakery sections overflow with demand. One hypermarket chain reported a 30 to 50 percent surge in sales, typical of the Eid season, boosted by competitive discounts and home-delivery options for online shoppers.

At traditional tailoring shops in areas like Al Sadd, Matar Qadeem and Mansoura, tailors are working round the clock on custom-stitched abayas and thobes. Women browse intricate fabrics and embroidery designs, balancing modern trends with classic Gulf patterns that remain popular for Eid prayers. “The final days of Ramadan are always our busiest,” said Abdulrahman Hassan, a tailor in Al Sadd. “Customers want everything perfect for the family celebrations.”

Residents are also preparing at home, cleaning houses, arranging Eidiya gifts for children and planning visits to relatives. Charity initiatives, including zakat distribution, continue as families share blessings with the less fortunate.

Despite the wider Middle East situation involving escalating tensions, shipping disruptions and humanitarian challenges in neighbouring regions, daily life in Qatar proceeds with normalcy and confidence.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) recently confirmed that there are well-stocked markets, stable supply chains and rigorous monitoring to prevent any price manipulation or shortages.

Pedro Rodriguez, a boutique employee at a major Doha mall observed the increased footfall: “Many people are staying in Qatar this Eid. They are shopping more, going out and celebrating here.” Conversations among customers may touch on regional developments, yet the steady crowds underscore a collective determination to uphold traditions.

Souq Waqif and neighbourhood markets add to the lively atmosphere, with vendors offering fresh sweets and spices. Eidiya ATMs at some malls dispense cash in small denominations for children, adding convenience to the season of giving.

The Ministry of Municipality and the Ministry of Interior have also reassured the public of all necessary safety and health measures in place.

As Qatar enters the final countdown to Eid Al Fitr, the buzz in shopping centres and hypermarkets mirrors the nation’s resilient spirit. Citizens and residents, both Qatari and expatriate, are embracing the occasion with joy, unity and gratitude, proving that even amid external challenges, the festive preparations continue unabated in this secure and welcoming country.
