Sajan, Al Kuwari bag titles at Katara Chess Open

Doha, Qatar: The Katara International Ramadan Open Classical Chess Championship, organised by the Qatar Chess Federation, concluded with the participation of 86 players across various age groups, reaffirming its status as one of the country’s leading chess tournaments.

President of the Qatar Chess Association Mohammed Al-Mudahka, alongside Deputy General Manager of the Katara Cultural Village Foundation, Saif Saad Al-Dosari, crowned the winners in the presence of Executive Director of the Federation, Hamad Al-Tamimi.

India’s Albin Sajan secured first place with 7.5 points, followed by compatriot Tanvesh Reddy with 6.5 points. Kazakhstan’s Abilai Suranchev finished third on tiebreak, while India’s John Jobsi came fourth with 6 points.

In the Qatari players category, Hamad Al-Kuwari won Best Qatari Player, while Asma Al-Hammadi claimed Best Qatari Female Player. Age-group awards went to Irfan Mohammed (under 18), Khalid
Al-Jumaat (under 14), and Mohammed Jerbi (under 10), highlighting emerging talent across the federation. Adam Al-Hamdoushi topped the Qatar Chess Training Center category.

The nine-round Swiss-system tournament, played under FIDE regulations with a time control of 45 minutes plus 30 seconds increment per move, featured strong competition throughout and offered total prize money of QR25,000.

Al-Mudahka praised the high competitive level and emphasized the tournament’s role in developing national players and improving international rankings, while
Al-Tamimi highlighted its continued success and the Federation’s plans to organise additional events to support emerging talent.
