Doha, Qatar: Qatar is joining the global scientific community in marking World Asteroid Day on June 30, highlighting the importance of increasing public awareness about asteroids and efforts to protect Earth from potential asteroid-related hazards.
In a social media post, the Qatar Calendar House stated that the annual observance aims to promote greater understanding of asteroids while encouraging scientific research and international cooperation to develop ideas and strategies for safeguarding the planet from possible asteroid impacts.
World Asteroid Day is observed each year on June 30 to commemorate the anniversary of the 1908 Tunguska asteroid event, when a massive asteroid exploded over Siberia, causing the largest recorded asteroid impact in modern history.
