Lusail’s MotoGP legacy

More than two decades after welcoming MotoGP for the first time, the Lusail International Circuit has established itself as one of the championship’s most recognisable venues. Its floodlit races have become a signature feature of the Qatar Grand Prix giving the event a distinct identity on the international calendar.

Lusail’s place in MotoGP history has been shaped by memorable battles, championship ambitions and some of the sport’s biggest names. From Valentino Rossi’s close duels to Marc Marquez’s dramatic encounters with Andrea Dovizioso, the circuit has provided the setting for some memorable racing moments. Its unique night-race format has further strengthened its appeal, making the Qatar round a distinctive stop for riders, teams and fans.

Qatar’s motorsport ambitions, however, extend well beyond MotoGP. The arrival of Formula 1 in 2021 brought another major championship to the country, while the World Endurance Championship has added further weight to Lusail’s growing international profile. Hosting three major global racing series is no small achievement and underlines the country’s ability to cater to different disciplines at the highest level.

Few venues in the region can match the range of top-level motorsport events staged at Lusail. This standing is not built on the circuit alone. It reflects sustained investment in infrastructure, modern facilities, technical capabilities and the experience required to manage competitions involving the world’s leading riders, drivers and teams.

The Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation and Lusail International Circuit have played a central role in building that reputation. Their continued efforts to bring major championships to Qatar and maintain the standards expected at this level have helped secure the country’s position in the global motorsport landscape.

This week’s Qatar Grand Prix reflects the value of that continuity. MotoGP’s return to Lusail is no longer simply another race on the calendar; it is part of a long-running relationship between Qatar and the championship, built on experience, trust and the ability to deliver a world-class event. As the circuit hosts more nights under the floodlights, that accumulated experience remains one of Lusail’s strongest assets.

The priority now should be to build on these credentials, continue enhancing the race experience and maintain Lusail’s appeal as a destination for the world’s leading championships.

The journey from its first premier-class race in 2004 to becoming a regular home for multiple world championships reflects how far Qatar has come. More importantly, it demonstrates that Qatar’s place in international motorsport is built not just on ambition, but on the ability to deliver.
