Lima: Peru’s government has declared a 60-day state of emergency across five maximum-security prisons holding nearly half of the nation's organized crime-linked inmates.
The measure, formalized through a decree, covers the Challapalca prison in Tacna, Cochamarca in Pasco, Miguel Castro Castro and Ancon I in Lima, and Trujillo Varones in La Libertad.
In these facilities, the National Police will maintain control of internal order with the support of the Armed Forces, the statement said.
The emergency measure applies to the prisons and an external perimeter of up to 200 meters, where constitutional rights to freedom of movement, assembly and personal liberty and security are temporarily suspended.
Authorities will carry out ground security operations, airspace surveillance, monitoring of the immediate electromagnetic spectrum, strict access controls and intelligence work to prevent escapes.
