Doha, Qatar: The National Planning Council (NPC) yesterday highlighted a comprehensive framework to transform the nation’s energy generation and mobility systems as part of its Third National Development Strategy (NDS3), leading toward Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030.
In a series of posts on X, NPC affirmed that the country is reinventing production and distribution by deploying advanced carbon capture and storage technologies, expanding renewable energy infrastructure, and increasing reliance on low-carbon fuels, rather than reducing energy consumption.
Meanwhile, the Council said that Qatar accelerates the electrification of its transport network to drive cleaner urban transit.
These combined initiatives are integrated with broader environmental targets, including a 70 percent reduction in groundwater extraction through sustainable reverse osmosis desalination, circular economy strategies to curb industrial pollution, and the designation of 30 percent of land and marine areas as protected reserves alongside active ecosystem restoration.
According to NPC, the country aims to build an agile, resilient economy fully prepared to support future generations by safeguarding native ecosystems while driving long-term industrial growth.
Alongside sustained economic growth, Qatar is taking ambitious steps to safeguard its natural habitats. Under the current development framework, the country is formally designating thirty percent of its total land mass and thirty percent of its marine areas as protected natural resources.
However, NPC stated that conservation authorities are directing targeted efforts toward rehabilitating thirty percent of the nation’s degraded ecosystems, ensuring that critical biodiversity is preserved even as urban and industrial infrastructure continues to develop.
To curb pollution and minimise environmental degradation, Qatar is also embedding circular economy principles across primary commercial and industrial activities.
By encouraging systemic waste reduction, expanding industrial recycling capabilities, and promoting sustainable consumption habits among businesses and residents, the nation seeks to eliminate unnecessary environmental burdens. Officials note that the strategy directly addresses Qatar’s arid climate and acute resource scarcity through aggressive water conservation mandates.
The country is drastically scaling back groundwater extraction by seventy percent, shifting its reliance toward low-energy, sustainable desalination techniques such as reverse osmosis.
